THE MEDICAL POET

HOW GREAT MY JOY

—after Thomas Hardy’s How Great My Grief

How great my joy, my griefs how few
Since I forsook all just for Thee!
By my songs I shall bring to view
How great my joy, my griefs how few
When on the cross, Thou made me new.
And now I want the world to see
How great my joy, my griefs how few,
Since I forsook all just for Thee.

TYPES AND SHADOWS

The flight of lizards into crevices
The burial of adders in the desert
The retreat of tortoises into their shells
The jumping of chipmunks into tree holes--
My running to You, O LORD.

(POEMS FIRST APPEARED IN "THE ABUNDANCE OF A HEART")
